Have you ever heard that sitting is the new smoking? Well, what does that mean? It means that if you sit too much and don’t move your body throughout the day, that you have an increased chance of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, and even certain types of cancers. The human body is designed to move.
In fact, it’s a genetic requirement, so we need to move the body throughout the day consistently. So in other words, if you’re going to the gym one for an hour a day and think that that’s all you have to do. It’s just not. So we need to move consistently. I always teach my patients that if they have a sitting type of a job, that they need to set a timer next to them and about every 30 to 45 minutes, get up, move around for a few minutes, and then sit back down.
Now, movement doesn’t mean you have to do some extremely strenuous thing all of the time. Even just walking. In fact, walking is one of the best things you can do for your health. So what are the benefits of movement? Well, they’re too numerous to name on this short video, but I can give you five of them.
One is you’re going to increase your metabolic rate. I. Which means you’ll maintain a healthy weight, you’ll decrease your chance of heart disease and strokes. You’ll increase your strength of your bones and your muscles, which contributes to longevity. You’ll be able to reduce inflammation. And we know that inflammation is the number one cause of all chronic illness, and you’ll also increase your mental health, which means you’ll be happier.
